I did a thing. I have a 2013 MacBook Pro and I’ve been on the market for a new one for quite a while. Last October, I was ready to buy the new MacBook that Apple would release. However, I was deeply disappointed by the direction they took. My old MacBook still feels more ‘Pro’ than the new one.
At the recent WWDC, the MacBook at least got a minor update to Kaby Lake but I was hoping for more. I think it still isn’t the right time to update, even though I might eventually.
Enter the new iPad Pro 10.5”. I was deeply impressed by the iOS11 and iPad Pro presentations. Apple has been waiting for those modifications too long but the current execution seems to be perfect. I think iOS11 will be a game changer as soon as it arrives and the performance of the iPad is remarkable. If I have to make compromises with regards to ports and keyboard, why not go all the way and gain some actual portability improvements.
I even spent the last few months looking at the competition but in the end didn’t find anything good. The closest probably still is the Microsoft Surface line but it suffers from the same problems like the MacBook with insufficient ports and - for a comparable configuration - is even more expensive.
And that’s why I went with an iPad instead. I’m curious to see how it is going to work as my main computer for 99% of tasks and to only go back to the MacBook for some serious development. Let’s see :).
